Purpose for the Position

To tend laundering machines to clean articles such as wearing apparel, sheets, blankets, and other linens used by the hotel and guests.

Essential Responsibilities
  1. Loads articles into washer and adds specific amount of detergent, soap, or other cleaning agent.
  2. Turns valve to fill washer with water.
  3. Starts machine that automatically washes and rinses articles.
  4. Lifts clean, wet articles from washer and places them successively into wringers and driers for measured time cycles.
  5. Sorts dried articles according to identification number or type.
  6. Folds and places item in appropriate storage bin.
  7. Lubricates machine, using grease gun and oilcan.
  8. May dissolve soap granules in hot water and steam to make liquid soap.
  9. May mend torn articles using needle and thread.
  10. May sort and count articles to verify quantities on laundry lists.
  11. May soak contaminated articles in neutralizer solutions in vat to precondition washing.
  12. May mix dyes and bleaches according to formula, and dye and bleach specified articles.
  13. All other duties as assigned by a manager or supervisor.

Physical Demands

Environmental Conditions

Inside: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. A job is considered "inside" if the worker spends approximately 75 percent or more of the time inside.

Noise and Vibration: Sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible injury to the sense of hearing, and / or sufficient vibration (production of an oscillating movement or strain on the body or its extremities from repeated motion or shock) to cause bodily harm if endured day after day.

Involves adjusting materials or controls of the machine, such as changing guides, adjusting timers and temperature gages, turning valves to allow flow or materials, and flipping switches in response to lights. Little judgment is involved in making these adjustments.

Specific Vocational Preparation

Specific Vocational Preparation includes an occupationally significant combination of: vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the-job training, or essential experience in less responsible jobs which lead to the higher job or serving in other jobs. Anything beyond short demonstration up to and including 30 days.
