Accountant for Ann Arbor Charter Township
Job description
The accountant will perform administrative and clerical work of significant responsibility in support of Ann Arbor Charter Township operations.
The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set.
Hours and Benefits - Full time with benefits
Supervision
The accountant performs varied duties in accordance with state statutes and township ordinances. The accountant exercises judgment and initiative to complete projects and tasks.
The work is performed under the general direction of the Township Comptroller with day-to- day oversight by the Township Supervisor. The work is generally performed independently.
Work Environment
Work is performed under typical office conditions.
Operates computer and other standard office equipment and is proficient with Excel and Microsoft 365. Expected to learn government administration and accounts management software.
Makes frequent contact with the public and other departments in the Township.
Attention to detail is important. Errors could cause confusion, delay of service or have financial and legal consequences.
Essential Functions
Support all accounting functions under the direction of the Comptroller including oversight and data entry of payables and payroll related items, preparation of budget and month-end close of financial statements.
Support all treasury functions under the direction of the Township Treasurer including cash collection, bank reconciliations, tax collections and disbursements, investments.
Professional development will be required by attending conferences, workshops and seminars related to job responsibilities, legislative updates, and continuing education.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree or master's degree in Accounting from an accredited university or college
Experience: No experience is required.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge: Knowledge of basic accounting principles and understanding of balance sheet and profit and loss or revenue and expenditure accounts is required.
Ability: Ability to organize time and to work independently and accomplish tasks. Ability to maintain detailed statistics, records, and clerical records. Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to compose correspondence and to prepare, type, and proofread reports as to form and logic flow. Ability to maintain accurate accounting records. Ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently. Ability to communicate effectively with the public, coworkers, other employees, other departments, officials, and other agencies.
Skill: Skill in reconciling groups of figures. Expertise and skill in utilizing computers, word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications. Proficiency with MS Word and Excel. Excellent customer service skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as organizational skills.
